If you had sex without using birth control or your birth control method failed (broken condom, missed birth control pills, etc), within the past 5 days (approximately 120 hours) you can use emergency contraceptive pills to reduce your risk of pregnancy. EC helps prevent pregnancy by (a) temporarily stopping eggs from being released or (b) stopping fertilization or (c) stopping a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb.

Health Awareness Services uses “Plan B” for emergency contraception; this can reduce your chance of getting pregnant by 89%.

EC will not work if you are already pregnant. EC will not cause an abortion.

EC is not meant to be used as a routine form of birth control.
